Here is a hefty 20lb+ snook caught by Scott Tiernan on a recent snook fishing trip through the back canals of Delray Beach, FL
Many people just assume the only time to catch monster snook is during the Summer months when they gather in large numbers to spawn near the beaches. Well…the monster snook have to go somewhere when the water temps drop, and they often congregate in pockets of warmer water that can be found in the back country canals of Palm Beach County. Snook fishing Florida backwater canals requires patience and a healthy supply of live baits. The abundance of live baits that are available during the Summer far outweighs the amount of live bait available during the Winter months in Palm Beach County, but those who take the time to find it will be rewarded with successful catches while Snook fishing Florida backwater canals.
In general at Delray Beach Fishing Charters, we focus our snook fishing efforts on the deeper areas of these canals when the water temperatures dip after a cold front, often finding higher concentrations of monster snook in areas where deep channels have been dredged for bigger boats. When the weather is cold after these fronts, the snook can get lethargic in the early morning hours, so it is best to fish during the hottest part of the day in the early afternoon. While Snook fishing Florida backwater canals during these colder conditions, we like to use live baits such as jumbo live shrimp, silver mullet, mojarra, pinfish, or threadfin herring. The type of bait we use is usually dictated by whatever is most readily available at the time. Occasionally we will even use goggle eyes if the water salinity is really high in the canal we are fishing.
When the water heats up a few days after a cold front, the snook become more active and start moving around in search for food. During these warmer periods you can fish shallower areas around mangroves and structures and strike some awesome action while Snook fishing Florida backwater canals. We like to use at least 50 lb braided line when trying to pull these monster snook away from structure. The heavier line also ensures that the monster snook will have a better chance at survival due to the fact that fight times are drastically reduced resulting in less stress on the snook. Snook fishing Florida backwater canals can be the inshore experience of a lifetime during the Winter months around Delray Beach!
